Match report

Lowestoft and Yarmouth 5,
Newmarket 1st XV 17
NEWMARKET bounced back this week to comprehensively out-play a full-strength Lowestoft and Yarmouth side. They also welcomed back skipper Craig Hunter who was outstanding all afternoon.
The game started with the home side squandering an early penalty chance after applying good pressure up-front. However, Newmarket defended stoutly and prevented the home side from scoring.

The balance of the match soon changed as soon as Newmarket picked up the pace of the game. Rick Cook was excellent in attack, constantly linking with the back line. Stephen Green was a constant threat and it wasn't long before Newmarket opened the scoring.

After several phases of play, the ball was moved smartly from right to left allowing coach Chris Kent to crash over the line from close range.

Newmarket continued to dominate and soon scored again, following significant contributions from Matt Carter at scrum half and Craig Jefferies in the back row.
The ball was moved quickly to the right following a quick ruck, allowing Eric Nathangle to dive over to give Newmarket a 10-0 lead.

The second half started in the same vein as the first half, with the home side applying pressure by utilising their weight advantage in the forwards.

Newmarket again soaked up the pressure with an impressive defensive effort. The first-time hits were awesome with Lowestoft and Yarmouth constantly being knocked backwards in the tackle.

Fifteen minutes after the break, Newmarket lost Matt Carter, their scrum half, with a hip injury, which reduced them to 14 men, having already made their substitutions. Ollie Shevki stepped in, which meant Newmarket were a man short out wide.

As in the first half, Newmarket began to assert their dominance attacking from deep. Time after time, Newmarket came close to scoring their third try – closest was Shez Franklin, who narrowly missed crowning his league debut with a try.

More great work from Craig Hunter meant Newmarket turned the ball over close to the home side's line. After some quick hands, Chris Kent scored his second try which effectively put the game out of sight. Olly Fowlston converted, giving
Newmarket an unassailable lead of 17-0.

The home side managed a late consolation try and Stephen Green threw a risky pass, which was intercepted and run back for a try. It was too late to affect the result, which leaves Newmarket in good shape after two league matches.

Newmarket will now look to build on this performance in a crucial fixture against West Norfolk on October 14.
